What Are Rare Earths?

Also known as lanthanides, rare earths can be defined as a group of 15 elements present in the periodic table with similar chemical properties. They have many uses in modern-day society, such as loudspeakers and computer hard drivers, telescope lenses, GPS devices, jet engines, MRI machines, aircraft, weapons, and batteries.

However, the exploration of rare earths is tough because they’re frequently bonded with other foreign substances, meaning that they should be isolated from them, this process is demanding and expensive.

These are the elements that are classified as rare earths: Scandium (Sc), Yttrium (Y), Lanthanum (La), Cerium (Ce), Praseodymium (Pr), Neodymium (Nd), Prometheium (Pm), Samarium (Sm), Europium (Eu), Gadolinium (Gd), Terbium (Tb), Dysprosium (Dy), Holmium (Ho), Erbium (Er), Thulium (Tm), Ytterbium (Yb) and Lutetium (Lu).

Currently, 95% of Rare Earth elements are produced in China, which has brought a concern to the rest of the world since China has been restraining the production and export of these essential elements in the last few years. But many countries are seeking a way to change this scenario and invest in rare earths extraction and mining.
